A Man from the South
Biomechanics Blog 4: A Man from the South
For modifications, I think the soldier would need something for everyday use being in the military and nothing that he would have to take on and off when performing tasks – something more permanent. A finger prosthetic for this missing digit that would be mobile when grasping objects will be perfect for execution of utilizing holding tools and when performing other ADL’s. According to the OTPF, the outcomes addressed would be occupational performance, participation, role competence, and quality of life.
As for the wife of the elder man, her ADL’s and lifestyle is a little different compared to a soldier’s lifestyle. I think that she is probably driving her and her husband around many days to keep her eyes on their vehicles that he tries to bet off on people. The ability to grip her steering wheel could be something that she would struggle with. One modification device I would recommend a steering wheel knob. This device attaches to the wheel and allows those with loss of finger strength to use a steering wheel much easier.
Hello Ryann,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. I also suggested that the wife utilize some form of adaptive equipment for her steering wheel. As we can tell from the story, driving or owning a vehicle is very important to her. She is upset that her husband is attempting to bet away her car. I also think that gripping a steering wheel without all of her digits would be quite difficult. I also chose the steering wheel knob as it it something that I am familiar with. One of my friend's dads had a steering wheel knob that allowed him to drive independently despite having some loss of grip strength in this dominant hand.
Overall, great post, and your blog is super cute. :)
Hi Ryann! I throughly enjoyed reading your take and ideas about A Man from the South. I briefly discussed a more permanent solution like the prosthetic as well. It would keep him from having to take other adaptive devices on and off throughout his day. I think this would also allow him to have more confidence and overall feel like he has not really lost anything. I also recommended the use of a steering knob to help the man's wife while driving. I think this idea will help her while driving with our hand, and I believe this will be a much safer option for her and other drivers.
