Guillain Barre Syndrome
Guillain Barre Syndrome- Marion's Story, Neuro Note 6

Guillain Barre is such an overwhelming
and terrifying illness. It is an autoimmune, demyelinating condition. The
symptoms are very progressive and debilitating. It starts off with numbing sensations
in the extremities, pain, and eventually can lead to paralysis. The one positive
is that typically most patients will recover from this.
In this blog, I watched a video of
a lady named Marion who went through the process of getting all of these
symptoms and the doctors were so unsure of what was going on within her body. Guillain Barre is very difficult to diagnose. After many appointments, they
finally gave her the diagnosis of Guillain Barre, and this was relieving to her
because now she could find a way to recover.
The biggest learning point for
myself in this testimony was that we truly need to listen to our client’s
symptoms and always hear them out. Marion expressed that her doctor seemed to
dismiss her condition many times and not take the symptoms that she presented very
seriously. The unknown put Marion through a lot of stress, and we never want a
client to feel like they are not our top priority. I think even if we don’t know
what is going on with the condition or symptoms presented, we need to always try
to seek out help from other professionals or to provide resources for more
help. This can ease the client and hopefully get them the answers they need. I
would recommend listening to Marion’s story because it shows us how much a
little empathy can go when working with a patient, even if you can’t present
them with the proper treatment or diagnosis right away. Our clients need to
know that we are here for them, and we will not stop until their needs are met
because this is our job and passion.
